Mauritius is a tropical island paradise situated in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The west coast is renowned for great weather and offers some of the best diving and water sports in the world. It is also ideally situated should you want to explore.

The mixed population of Mauritius is made up of people from Africa, India, China and Europe and their warmth and friendliness make a valuable tourist resource. Hindu temples mix with mosques and Christian churches. The capital is Port Louis which features colonial architecture and a fascinating market specialising in fresh spices, fruit and vegetables. The island is as varied in its geography as it is in its cultures. Mauritius is volcanic in origin and the rich and productive soil is the result. The coast is surrounded by coral reefs making for protected sandy beaches and marvellous blue waters. Mauritian cuisine offers the best of its varied cultural traditions, local fruit, vegetables, spices and fresh fish.

The climate is agreeable most of the year. With less rain and humidity, one of the best times to visit is in winter which occurs from July to September. Weather-wise, the hottest period is from January to April, when the long days can be very hot and humid. December to March is the best time for diving, when the water is at its clearest. June to August is best for surfing and October to April is excellent for big game fishing, as this is when the large predators feed close to shore.

Apart from the sandy beaches and blue lagoons, you will be delighted to discover that the island has plenty of other attractions too. From some of the world’s rarest stamps to the first ever race course in the Indian Ocean.

You will also get a chance to learn the island’s indigenous wild dance, the Sega, which originated among the African slaves.
